No Decision Made on Proposal for Summit Talks
The Presidential Office on the 19th responded to the Democratic Party of Korea's criticism of the current administration's tax cut policy and its plan to push for a 'financial collapse hearing' by calling it "brazen hypocrisy."
A Presidential Office official told reporters at the Yongsan Presidential Office that "the national debt was 660 trillion won in 2017 and increased by more than 400 trillion won to 1,076 trillion won in 2022," adding, "It is absurd and brazen hypocrisy for the Democratic Party, which could be the main culprit of the financial collapse, to hold a hearing."
The official said, "The current administration's tax support policies are aimed at promoting investment, stabilizing people's livelihoods, and asset formation," and predicted, "If investment revives and consumption recovers, thereby revitalizing the economy, it will contribute to a virtuous cycle of growth and tax revenue."
He added, "I hope the majority party, the Democratic Party, seriously reflects on what truly saves people's livelihoods and takes a responsible stance toward future generations."
Additionally, the Presidential Office stated that it tried to send a congratulatory flower basket to Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, but was unable to reach him.
A Presidential Office official said, "Since morning, the Senior Secretary for Political Affairs has tried several times to contact the new leader to deliver a congratulatory flower basket in the name of the President, but received no response," and added, "It seems difficult to deliver it today."
Regarding the bilateral meeting proposed by Lee to President Yoon Suk-yeol, the official said, "The official position is that nothing has been decided at this time."
