Basic Science Support Institute Successfully Completes Youth Synchrotron Radiation Accelerator Experience Camp

Sponsored by the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Government and the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education, this youth science camp was organized to nurture future talents in the field of synchrotron radiation accelerators and was held at the KBSI Ochang Center, which possesses national large-scale research facility equipment infrastructure.

The participating students engaged in activities such as ▲accelerator (microscope) exploration through counterfeit currency detection ▲synchrotron radiation accelerator board game ▲cell organelle observation experiments using optical microscopes ▲understanding and experiencing the ultra-high magnetic field MRI system, and also took field tours of facilities including the ’Bio-exclusive ultra-high voltage transmission electron microscope (Bio-EM)‘, ’Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)‘, ’Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)‘ research buildings installed at the KBSI Ochang Center, as well as the IBS ’Heavy Ion Accelerator‘ facility.

Kim Hye-jin, Head of Management Support at KBSI, stated, “We hope that the students participating in this camp gain a deep understanding of the synchrotron radiation accelerator and, through this, develop creativity and scientific thinking skills.”

KBSI plans to continue operating various advanced learning programs for more youth and teachers in Chungbuk to provide diverse learning opportunities that go beyond raising awareness of synchrotron radiation accelerators, including experiment- and practice-centered inquiry analysis and career exploration linked to the accelerator.
