AI G3 Leap: Korea Begins Establishing Research Hub with 36 Billion KRW Investment

Ministry of Science and ICT and IITP Select Project Consortium
KAIST, Korea University, Yonsei University, and POSTECH Participate

The Ministry of Science and ICT (hereinafter referred to as MSIT) and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (hereinafter referred to as IITP) announced on the 18th that they will carry out a project to establish research hubs to advance the nation to AI G3 status.

AI G3 Leap: Korea Begins Establishing Research Hub with 36 Billion KRW Investment

MSIT and IITP have selected a consortium consisting of KAIST, Korea University, Yonsei University, and POSTECH (hereinafter referred to as the Consortium) as the executing organization to establish and operate AI research hubs.

Global AI-leading countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States have been creating AI research centers through large-scale government-led investments. In line with this trend, the government has launched this project to create a hub that consolidates the AI industry-academia-research cooperation ecosystem.

The Consortium will receive a total of 36 billion KRW in national funding from this year through 2028, and in addition, it has secured commitments for over 50 billion KRW in in-kind and cash investments from local governments and companies.

The AI research hub will be established at the Seoul AI Hub (7,050.5㎡, approximately 2,132 pyeong) located in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Not only domestic universities but also local governments and large and small enterprises will participate as cooperating institutions to consolidate the AI industry-academia-research ecosystem and activate the AI-based industrial ecosystem.

Leading overseas AI research institutions from countries such as the United States, Canada, and France will also participate as cooperating institutions. The project plans to conduct international joint AI research, including ▲ transcending the Neural Scaling Laws (laws describing the cost curve required for AI model training and operation) ▲ research on robot foundation models, aiming to serve as a hub for international AI joint research.

More than 15 outstanding overseas AI researchers will reside in Korea for a certain period to conduct joint research with domestic researchers, and regular public seminars and international forums will be held.

Through the AI research hub opening ceremony scheduled for next month, the project will present a concrete blueprint for the research hub and plans to establish a sustainable growth model through independent incorporation.

Kang Do-hyun, the 2nd Vice Minister of MSIT, stated, "Through the AI research hub, we will elevate the Republic of Korea to a global center of AI innovation," adding, "We will devote all efforts to developing and utilizing innovative AI technologies together with the best domestic and international AI researchers, and based on this, firmly establish Korea’s global AI leadership."
