Hyundai Rotem Secures Additional Order for Double-Decker Cars in Boston, USA... Worth 240 Billion KRW

Additional Volume Projects Continuously Secured Since First Contract in 2008

Hyundai Rotem announced on the 16th that it signed the main contract on the 14th (local time) for an additional supply project of double-decker passenger cars worth $175.79 million (approximately 240 billion KRW) commissioned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the United States.

The MBTA double-decker passenger car project is being carried out to respond to the increasing number of local commuters and to replace the existing aging passenger cars to ensure convenience and safety for citizens.

This is the third time Hyundai Rotem is supplying double-decker passenger cars to MBTA. Previously, Hyundai Rotem first won the MBTA double-decker passenger car project in 2008 and then signed a supply contract for additional quantities of the same project in 2019. The additional quantity project is currently being delivered sequentially on-site and is expected to be completed by this year.

Based on its expertise in manufacturing double-decker passenger cars, Hyundai Rotem has contributed to improving local transportation infrastructure through thorough quality and delivery management. In particular, even during the period when the global supply chain was disrupted due to COVID-19, Hyundai Rotem managed the preceding projects to ship the initial batch five months ahead of the contract deadline. Hyundai Rotem also plans to further enhance after-sales management of the vehicles by updating the maintenance manuals of the previously supplied double-decker passenger cars.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Rotem first entered the U.S. market in 2006, winning orders for double-decker passenger cars in California and Florida, as well as electric multiple unit (EMU) projects in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, it was recognized for its overseas rail vehicle business capabilities by being selected as the supplier for the Denver EMU project in 2010 and the Los Angeles (LA) Metro EMU supply earlier this year.

A Hyundai Rotem official stated, "We will do our best to continuously deliver rail vehicles that local citizens can be satisfied with and use on time," adding, "Based on our track record of collaborating with local implementing agencies, we will actively pursue future rail vehicle demand in the U.S. market."
