Following the training of 20 first-term Village Gardeners in May, a total of 80 Village Gardeners will be trained starting in August
Theoretical education on tree basics and plant care, practical training on sustainable garden maintenance including garden design and drafting... Appointment as Village Gardeners offers volunteer opportunities, boosting pride and encouraging ongoing interest and participation in garden management
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) continues to nurture community gardeners to create a garden culture together with residents.
Seongdong-gu is focusing on establishing a ‘5-Minute Daily Garden City’ this year, and to reflect the high demand for garden culture among residents and spread customized garden culture, it has launched a full-scale operation of a community gardener training program.
This training particularly emphasizes encouraging residents, in an era of personalization and super-aging, to directly create and maintain gardens, thereby fostering a sense of attachment to their local community.
The district plans to train a total of 80 community gardeners over four sessions from August to November. In May, to commemorate the proclamation of the ‘5-Minute Daily Garden City Seongdong,’ it trained 20 community gardeners in the first cohort.
The training is divided into theory and practical sessions, each held 10 times, at the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center (31, Majang-ro 39-gil) and the garden in front of the Seongdong-gu Office.
Theory classes cover basics of trees, planting methods and tips, and plant care techniques, while practical classes include basics of garden design, drawing plans, and planting practice, offering various programs for sustainable garden maintenance.
Additionally, the district plans to appoint those who complete the training as ‘community gardeners’ and provide volunteer opportunities such as garden management within the community. This aims not only to boost pride as ‘community gardeners’ but also to encourage continuous interest and participation in garden management.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Through the community gardener training program, I hope residents will deepen their understanding of garden culture and increase their pride in the local community," adding, "We will continue to strive to create a city where residents can cultivate and enjoy gardens in their daily lives and fully experience the rest and leisure that gardens provide."
