Early Morning of the 14th, Someone Dug Up and Damaged the Burial Mound
CCTV Analysis Confirms Signs of Intrusion, Suspect Under Investigation
Seolleung, one of the Joseon royal tombs registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, was found damaged. The woman in her 50s who caused the damage was caught by the police within 15 hours.
According to the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul on the 14th, a fist-sized hole was discovered at Seolleung located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, that morning. The hole was found around 11:17 a.m. by an official from the Seolleung management office, who reported, "Someone dug into the burial mound and damaged it," and immediately notified the police.
After analyzing CCTV footage, the police confirmed that a woman had trespassed into Seolleung at around 2:03 a.m. that day. The woman, identified as Ms. A, was tracked as a suspect, and she was arrested at her residence around 5:40 p.m. following the investigation of her movements.
The police are currently investigating Ms. A regarding the crime and related matters.
Seolleung is the royal tomb of King Seongjong, the 9th king of Joseon, and his third queen, Queen Jeonghyeon of the Yun clan. It was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2009.
