Automatic Detection of Profile and General Chat Impersonation

Kakao Introduces 'Fake Signal' in KakaoTalk to Prevent Phishing Crimes

Kakao announced on the 14th that it has newly introduced the 'Fake Signal' feature to prevent impersonation scams and phishing crimes.

The Fake Signal, which proactively delivers warning messages to help users stay alert, is applied to KakaoTalk profiles and regular chats. By combining artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies with Kakao's 'Anti-Abusing System,' it analyzes KakaoTalk profile information, account details, and usage history to automatically detect profiles with a high likelihood of impersonation.

A warning icon is displayed on suspected impersonation profile images, and if users try to add a suspected impersonation account as a friend or initiate a conversation, a warning popup message appears to alert users in advance to prevent harm. Additionally, along with the warning message, users are guided on how to immediately block and report the suspected impersonation account.

Along with the introduction of the Fake Signal, Kakao has reorganized its brand system related to 'Phishing and Scam Alert Features.' 'Talk Siren' has been elevated to a top-level brand encompassing 'Phishing and Scam Alert Features,' with Fake Signal, Globe Signal, and Stranger Signal (formerly Talk Siren) placed as subcategories. Kakao plans to continuously enhance and expand features to technically protect users in the future.

Meanwhile, Kakao announced on July 15th that it would strengthen sanctions against so-called illegal leading room activities as part of revisions to the KakaoTalk operation policy, and the revised policy will be applied starting from that day.
