Plans are being explored to integrate artificial intelligence into patent examination. With the incorporation of AI, it is expected that the efficiency of patent examination tasks will improve, supporting the rapid acquisition of patents.
On the 14th, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that it will hold a presentation with LG AI Research Institute on strategies for utilizing AI to support patent examination.
Both parties plan to officially begin a technical demonstration and research project to build an AI patent examination system, using the presentation as a starting point.
Prior to the presentation, KIPO established the "AI Utilization Patent Administration Innovation Roadmap (2023?2027)" last year to enhance the efficiency of patent, trademark, and design examination tasks, and collaborated with LG AI Research Institute to develop a large-scale AI language model specialized for patent administration.
The presentation will share the process and results of deriving strategies to apply the patent-specific language model developed last year and the latest AI technologies to patent administration. It will also provide time to discuss future projects and cooperation between KIPO and LG AI Research Institute.
The presentation will be attended by Lee In-su, Director General of the Industrial Property Information Bureau at KIPO, and Lee Hwa-young, Executive Director of LG AI Research Institute, among others.
The utilization strategies to be presented will cover areas within patent examination where AI can be applied and detailed methods of application. This event is expected to serve as a compass in determining the direction and scope of AI technology demonstration, research, and development projects.
The strategy development process for applying AI in examination tasks involved patent examiners from KIPO and technical and consulting experts from LG AI Research Institute.
The utilization strategy includes ▲ analysis results of patent examination procedures and patent information systems ▲ identification of patent examination areas requiring AI support and review of AI technology applicability by area ▲ detailed AI technology application plans to implement the characteristics of each patent examination field.
Based on the presentation, KIPO plans to actively promote AI technology demonstration and research projects with LG AI Research Institute starting in the second half of this year to verify the performance and effectiveness of AI technologies applied to patent examination.
The blueprint is to gradually build a patent examination environment applying optimal AI technologies.
Director Lee stated, “As industrial property applications increase and vast patent information accumulates, the internal examination burden at KIPO is gradually growing. By actively introducing AI into the patent administration system and improving the efficiency of examination tasks, we will help domestic companies secure patents quickly.”
