Gansong Art Museum Hosts 'When Clouds Clear, Moon Shines; When Wind Blows, Stars Sparkle' Exhibition at Seoul DDP
99 Cultural Heritage Items Including National Treasures and Treasures Presented Through Immersive Media Art
Director Jeon In-geon: "An Attempt to Comfortably Introduce Traditional Art to the Jalpase Generation"
"The exhibition title 'When the clouds clear, the moon shines; when the wind blows, the stars sparkle' is taken from a calligraphy couplet by Kansong Jeon Hyeongpil left after liberation. It is a phrase expressing the joy of welcoming a new era of liberation after the dark times of the Japanese colonial period, depicting our cultural heritage as a new light in the darkness. We chose this phrase because it is suitable for helping people understand our traditional culture through imagination."

The Kansong Museum of Art presents a large-scale immersive media art exhibition featuring national treasures and treasures.
At a press conference for the Kansong Museum of Art's media art exhibition 'When the clouds clear, the moon shines; when the wind blows, the stars sparkle' held on the afternoon of the 13th at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Museum in Jung-gu, Seoul, Kansong Museum Director Jeon In-geon explained the exhibition as follows.
This exhibition is the first immersive media art exhibition by the Kansong Museum of Art, focusing on Korean traditional art, the foundation of K-culture. Visitors can experience 99 national treasures, treasures, and major works owned by the Kansong Museum digitally.
The Kansong Museum of Art newly reveals 99 collected works as digital content in a 411-pyeong space consisting of eight large exhibition rooms, two intermission spaces, and an experience zone, including 'Hunminjeongeum Haerye' and Shin Yun-bok's 'Portrait of a Beauty.'
For the exhibition, the Kansong Museum of Art explained that it plans to provide a multi-sensory experience to visitors by connecting paintings and the real world using various technologies such as kinetic art, motion graphics, and LiDAR sensors, employing light, sound, scent, and texture.
The project is overseen by Park Dong-seok, head of Kansong Lab. Director Cho Young-wook of To Be Continue directed the exhibition rooms for 'Hunminjeongeum (Haerye),' Hyewon Shin Yun-bok's 'Portrait of a Beauty,' and Chusa Kim Jeong-hui's calligraphy and painting. Shin Jae-hee, CEO of VOM Lab, was responsible for Gyeomjae Jeong Seon's 'Haak Jeonsincheop' and 'Gwandong Myeongseungcheop,' as well as Hyewon Shin Yun-bok's 'Hyewon Jeonsincheop.' Director Lee Sang-hoon of H3 took charge of the spatial composition of the 'Gilt-bronze Three-bodied Amitabha Buddha' hall, Director Jeon Jin-ho of Palomino directed 'Samcheongcheop' by Taneun Lee Jeong, and Director Hwang Se-jin of Studio Lennon & First Gate handled the media production for Gyeomjae Jeong Seon's 'Geumgang Naesan' and the intermission space.
Director Park Dong-seok said, "Since this is Kansong's first attempt at a media exhibition and the first time approaching the public, we used artifacts familiar to the public. We focused on showing that traditional art is not difficult for the public."

Director Cho Young-wook introduced, "'Portrait of a Beauty' was the part I most wanted to take charge of in the Kansong project, so I directed it to appear as an attractive exhibition room. I aimed to approach the space from Shin Yun-bok's perspective, and upon entering the space, visitors can view the original appearance of the Portrait of a Beauty."
Director Jeon In-geon said, "Immersive exhibitions circulating worldwide, including in Korea, are mostly centered on Western IPs, but Korea also has excellent IPs that have not been utilized. This exhibition started from that question. Kansong tried to preserve our cultural heritage, which was destroyed and distorted by Japan during the Japanese colonial period, with a spirit of cultural patriotism after liberation. In the current situation where Korean popular culture is influencing the world through Hallyu, I believe that our cultural heritage is the foundation of our popular culture."
Director Jeon added, "Media exhibitions can transcend the constraints of space and time. I think media exhibitions are important for experiencing and enjoying our culture easily and enjoyably without limitations. I expect overseas expansion to be materialized after the exhibition opens."
He also emphasized, "This exhibition is also the launch of the immersive media exhibition brand ImmersiveK that the Kansong Museum of Art aims to develop. We will build a media exhibition lineup utilizing not only traditional art IPs but all cultural heritage IPs of Korea."
Furthermore, he requested, "This exhibition's title is taken from a phrase meaning the shining liberation after the darkness of the Japanese colonial period. I hope visitors enjoy our cultural heritage, depicted as new light in a dark exhibition hall."
'When the clouds clear, the moon shines; when the wind blows, the stars sparkle' will be held from the 15th until April 30 of next year at Exhibition Hall 2 of the Dongdaemun DDP Museum.
