Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the Yeonhui Madangnori performance "Bangjajeon" together with the Nowon Cultural Center to expand cultural life opportunities for local senior citizens.

The district and Nowon Cultural Center have been presenting high-quality performances that creatively reinterpret the traditional Korean courtyard play Madangnori with new sensibilities every year. This year's "Bangjajeon" is directed by Lee Kyung-sook, head of the Nowon Cultural Center Gugak Arts Troupe, with the master of Samulnori Kim Deok-su as artistic director. The cast is also impressive, including Ahn Dae-cheon (playing Bangja), Lee Yong-sik (playing Byeon Hak-do) from Pposik-i, and Lee Sook (playing Wolmae) from Jeonwonilgi.

In particular, actor Ahn Dae-cheon, who plays Bangja, is a certified holder of the national intangible cultural heritage Goseong Ogwangdae, and actress Jung Hye-bin, who plays Chunhyang, is a certified holder of the national intangible cultural heritage Pansori Simcheongga. As can be seen from their credentials, the performance adds artistic depth as well as a cheerful atmosphere for the enjoyment of senior citizens.

The 2024 Yeonhui Madangnori "Bangjajeon" is a restructured work that makes the well-known classic more uniquely experienced by focusing on the charming supporting character "Bangja" from "Chunhyangjeon" as the protagonist. Starting with the procession of the new government magistrate, "Bangjajeon" tells the story of love and hardship between Chunhyang and Bangja. The performance will feature the Hannuri Yeonhui Troupe, Good Good Art, and Park Seo-jun (6th grade at Bulam Elementary School), among others, presenting a rich and lively show with traditional melodies and dance.

The performance will take place on the 30th and 31st at the gymnasium of Seoul National University of Science and Technology. This free event is open to all senior citizens aged 60 and above (born before 1965) residing in Nowon-gu.

Residents wishing to attend can make advance reservations on a first-come, first-served basis, with up to two tickets per person, and must bring identification on the day of the performance. Reservations can be made in two ways: ▲ online application through the Nowon Cultural Center website (August 19?20 / 1,500 seats available) ▲ phone application (August 22?23 / 1,000 seats available).

Meanwhile, last year, the district and Nowon Cultural Center successfully held the Yeonhui Madangnori "Madeul, Ppaengpa," adapted from "Simcheongjeon," which received great acclaim from local artists as well as senior citizens.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Both the modern succession and development of traditional culture and the realization of cultural welfare for senior citizens are important tasks, making this performance even more meaningful. We will continue to support so that the spirit of communication and harmony unique to the Madangnori genre can spread beyond the stage into everyday life.”
