Global Music Festival BBC Proms Arrives in Korea This Winter

Lotte Cultural Foundation to Host 'BBC Proms Korea'
8 Performances at Lotte Concert Hall This December
Featuring Ryan Wigglesworth, Hillary Hahn, Lee Ji-yoon, and More

The BBC Proms, a music festival representing Europe and held in London, UK, will arrive in Korea this winter.


The Lotte Cultural Foundation announced on the 13th that BBC Proms Korea will be held from December 2 to 8. In collaboration with the UK’s BBC Proms, a total of eight performances will be held at the Lotte Concert Hall. The BBC Proms is a world-renowned music festival organized by the British BBC broadcaster, which began in 1895. It is a stage that all performers dream of debuting on, and every year, the newly debuted performers become a hot topic.


The BBC Proms is especially loved by many for its unique efforts to increase public accessibility to music through a variety of performances beyond classical music, affordable prices, diverse events, and broadcasts through various media such as radio.


So far, the BBC Proms has been held overseas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2002, Melbourne, Australia in 2016, Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2017, and Tokyo, Japan in 2019 and 2022.

Top domestic and international performers will grace the stage of BBC Proms Korea. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ryan Wigglesworth, delicate and profound violinist Hilary Hahn, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Sophie Dervaux who is expanding her career as a conductor while serving as principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic, concertmaster Lee Ji-yoon of the prestigious German orchestra Berlin Staatskapelle, cellist Choi Ha-young who won the 2022 Queen Elizabeth Competition, pianist Choi Jae-hyuk and his ensemble Ensemble Blanc, cellist Han Jae-min who is the 2024 Lotte Concert Hall In-House Artist, baritone Kim Tae-han who won the vocal category of the Queen Elizabeth Competition, and the Paris Tree Cross Boys Choir will perform.


Additionally, to allow audiences to enjoy various genres, the Jarasum Jazz Night and West End Musical Gala Concert will also be held. Various events commemorating Korea’s first Proms will take place, including the Asian premiere of composer Shin Dong-hoon’s cello concerto and music-related workshops.


Kim Hyung-tae, CEO of the Lotte Cultural Foundation, said, “The first Korean stage of the BBC Proms, regarded as the world’s best classical festival, being held at the Lotte Concert Hall proves the excellent hardware and planning capabilities of the venue. We will create the best festival with substantial programs so that more people can enjoy this symbolic first BBC Proms held in Korea.”


Ticket prices for BBC Proms Korea range from 120,000 to 250,000 KRW for R seats, 90,000 to 190,000 KRW for S seats, 70,000 to 120,000 KRW for A seats, 40,000 to 80,000 KRW for B seats, and 30,000 to 40,000 KRW for C seats. The Lotte Cultural Foundation announced that it plans to introduce and sell special seats at lower prices than the existing ticket prices so that more audiences can enjoy BBC Proms Korea without burden.


Vineyard members can pre-book tickets starting from the 20th, and general members can book from the 22nd. Vineyard Black members receive a 20% discount, while Red and Leaf members receive a 15% discount. Additionally, an extra 5% early bird discount is available for bookings made by the 31st.


To reduce the burden on audiences enjoying various programs, BBC Proms package tickets will be sold. Vineyard members purchasing all eight performances can receive a 40% discount for up to two tickets per person, and general members receive a 30% discount. For the four-performance package, Vineyard members get a 30% discount, and general members get a 20% discount.
