Nam Hankwon, the governor of Ulleung County?the only island local government in North Gyeongsang Province?has taken proactive steps to improve the region's poor educational environment.
According to Ulleung County on the 13th, Governor Nam visited the Ministry of Education the previous day to actively propose the inclusion of educational policy measures in the partial amendment bill for the Special Act on Support for Remote Islands such as Ulleungdo and Heuksando, which was introduced by National Assembly member Lee Sanghwi (People Power Party, Pohangnam-Ulleung).
On that day, Governor Nam highlighted the sharp decline in the number of local students and the resulting reality that Ulleung students are being forced to move to inland areas under the current university entrance system. He earnestly appealed for policy support to ensure the survival of local schools and nurture future talent.
An official from the Ministry of Education's talent selection system responded, "There is a trend to reduce special admissions outside of the regular quota, and sufficient discussion is needed to consider fairness with other regions. However, we empathize with the educational situation facing Ulleung County and will actively review the matter."
Governor Nam stated, "I will do my best to ensure the passage of the partial amendment bill for the Special Act on Support for Remote Islands such as Ulleungdo and Heuksando," and added, "Through the newly designated special educational development zone, we will discover various educational policies and foster talent who will lead the future of Ulleung County by establishing the K-U City and Talent Development Foundation."
Governor Nam Hankwon is also taking the lead in implementing various educational policies, such as attracting nationwide school excursion groups to Ulleungdo and Dokdo and sending local students to language training programs in the United States.
