Former Gyeongnam Governor Kim's Possible Presidential Run
President Yoon Suk-yeol approved the special pardon and restoration of rights plan for the August 15 Liberation Day, which passed the Cabinet meeting on the 13th.
The Presidential Office announced through a press release that "President Yoon approved the special pardon, special commutation, special restoration of rights, and special remission measures decided at the 35th Cabinet meeting."
The restoration of rights recipients included former Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo, as well as former Blue House senior secretaries Cho Yoon-sun and Hyun Ki-hwan from the Park Geun-hye administration, former Policy Coordination Secretary Ahn Jong-beom, and former National Intelligence Service Director Won Sei-hoon from the Lee Myung-bak administration.
Former Governor Kim was sentenced to prison for the 'Druking comment manipulation' case and was released while serving his sentence. With this restoration of rights, he is now eligible to run in the 2027 presidential election.
Earlier, the Ministry of Justice held a full meeting of the Pardon Review Committee on the 8th and finalized the list of candidates for special pardon and restoration of rights.
