Gangbuk-gu Renovates Graves of Six Independence Patriots Including Lee Jun and Lee Si-young Status of the Burial Sites of Patriotic Martyrs and National Patriots in Gangbuk-gu. Provided by Gangbuk-gu.

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced on the 13th that it plans to repair the access roads and install decks and railings by June next year to ensure accessibility and safety for visitors at six nationally registered cultural heritage sites, which are the graves of independence activists located in the Suyu-dong and Ui-dong areas.


The six graves of independence activists include those of Lee Jun, Lee Si-young, Yeo Un-hyeong, Shin Ik-hee, Son Byeong-hee, and Kim Chang-sook.


This maintenance project was applied for as a nationally registered cultural heritage repair and maintenance project to the Cultural Heritage Administration in March last year, and the project was confirmed in November of the same year. After establishing the "National Registered Cultural Heritage Repair and Maintenance Plan" in June, the district is currently conducting design services and plans to complete the maintenance by June next year through a review by the Cultural Heritage Committee and by contracting specialized national heritage repair companies.


In particular, the entire repair and maintenance process will be carried out with expert consultation to ensure the safety of visitors to the independence activists' graves while preserving the nationally registered cultural heritage.


Gangbuk-gu has been maintaining the graves that embody the noble spirit of sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs, utilizing them as sites for historical education, and continuously promoting trail maintenance and safety inspections.


Mayor Lee Soon-hee said, "Gangbuk-gu is a city where one can reflect on the modern and contemporary history of Korea, with Bonghwanggak, the birthplace of the March 1st Movement, as well as the National April 19th Cemetery and the graves of patriotic martyrs and independence activists." She added, "We will do our best to support residents and visitors who come to the graves of patriotic martyrs and independence activists so that they can inherit and develop their noble spirit of sacrifice."
