Hyundai Motor Introduces Korea's First Electronic Paper Beacon Access Card

Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 13th that it has developed Korea's first electronic paper (E-paper) beacon access card and will gradually introduce it to domestic and overseas business sites.

Hyundai Motor has filed a patent for an access card applying an electronic ink LCD display instead of the plastic RF (Radio Frequency) cards, which are used as a standard by domestic and international companies and institutions.

The electronic paper beacon access card uses an LCD display to show electronic ink, allowing personal information to be edited and changed, making it semi-permanently reusable. A beacon is a device that periodically transmits signals to convey location information.

For example, Hyundai Motor produces more than 1,000 plastic access cards annually based on its Yangjae headquarters. By introducing the electronic paper beacon access card, it is expected that the use of plastic can be significantly reduced. Expanding its application to all business sites operated by Hyundai Motor domestically and internationally, such as factories, research centers, and service centers, will further increase the cost-saving effect.

The electronic paper beacon access card displays personal information such as the visitor’s affiliation, name, and photo on the LCD display, enabling visual identity verification without a separate confirmation process. Additionally, if a visitor enters an unauthorized area, an alarm sounds, the LCD display color changes from white to red, and the control room can track the location in real time, allowing systematic security management.

On the back of the access card, there is an SOS emergency request button that secures golden time and enables prompt initial response in case of an emergency.

Han Taegwon, manager of Hyundai Motor’s Security Planning and Operations Team, who was in charge of developing the electronic paper beacon access card, said, "We have already introduced the electronic paper beacon access card in June for the remodeling construction workers at the Yangjae headquarters." He added, "By adopting the electronic paper beacon access card, we expect to enhance visitor convenience at Hyundai Motor and strengthen security and safety management at business sites."
