Transfer of Korean-style Smart City Systems and Technologies, Promoting Expansion into Vietnam

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 13th that it will open the "Korea-Vietnam Smart City Construction Technology Cooperation Center" (hereinafter referred to as the Cooperation Center) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Cooperation Center was promoted as an official development assistance (ODA) project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to implement the "Memorandum of Understanding on Construction and Urban Development Cooperation" signed between the heads of state of the two countries and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam in 2018.

This project has been carried out for four years since 2020 by participating organizations consisting of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement. It is expected to establish a foothold for the Korean construction and IT industries to enter the Vietnamese market and serve as a hub for smart city cooperation between the two countries.

The Cooperation Center is located at the Construction Training Institute under the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam. It consists of various facilities such as the Korean Smart City Technology Exhibition Hall, Smart City Certification Data Center, Smart Virtual Reality (VR) Experience Center, and Education Center.

About 150 people, including Cheon Jae-min, Director of Overseas Construction Support Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Choi Young-sam, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Vietnam, Kim Byung-seok, President of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, Nguyen Truong Van, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam, and businesspeople from both countries, are expected to attend the completion ceremony.

Vietnam is the top country in Asia in terms of overseas construction contract amounts. It is a major market with high demand for urbanization and regional development, sustaining economic growth of over 7% annually.

Meanwhile, last month, Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, visited Vietnam to promote the implementation of the Vietnam urban development cooperation program, a diplomatic achievement of President Yoon Suk-yeol, and signed the "MOU on Urban and Housing Development" and the "Smart City and Social Housing Construction Implementation Plan."
