Gyeonggi Nambu Autonomous Police Commission Expands Rear License Plate Enforcement to 90 Locations Rear License Plate Enforcement Equipment

The Gyeonggi-do Southern Autonomous Police Committee is investing 3.1 billion KRW of provincial funds to install new ‘rear unmanned enforcement devices’ at 90 high-traffic accident locations across the province to reduce casualties from serious traffic accidents.

The main installation sites include ▲ Jungang-dong Intersection in Jungwon-gu, Seongnam-si ▲ LG 5th Intersection in Suji-gu, Yongin ▲ Arts and Culture Center in Ansan-si ▲ Yeonghwa Elementary School Intersection on Gyeongsu-daero, Suwon ▲ Telephone Office Intersection on Sinheung-ro, Bucheon ▲ City Hall Back Gate in Namyang-eup, Hwaseong, among others. Once installation is complete, the number of rear unmanned enforcement devices in the southern Gyeonggi area will increase to 147 locations.

The rear unmanned enforcement device captures the rear license plate of vehicles to detect traffic violations and impose fines.

It recognizes the rear license plates of all vehicles, including general four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles (two-wheeled vehicles). Current traffic enforcement CCTV systems capture front license plates, making it difficult to enforce regulations on motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles that display rear license plates. It can also enforce helmet non-wearing violations.

The Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency has completed priority site analysis for high-accident locations and on-site surveys for installation suitability. Installation will begin on-site starting this September.

Kang Kyung-ryang, Chairman of the Gyeonggi-do Southern Autonomous Police Committee, stated, "A comparative analysis of accident occurrences before equipment installation in 2021 and after installation in 2023 confirmed a 13.9% reduction in traffic accident casualties and a 23.1% decrease in traffic fatalities, demonstrating the effectiveness of traffic safety improvements. We will strive to establish a proper traffic culture for two-wheeled vehicles by expanding rear enforcement devices and strengthen communication with local communities through traffic safety briefings and other initiatives."

Meanwhile, the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency has announced the administrative notice regarding new equipment installation sites on the provincial police website (www.ggpolice.go.kr) and will collect residents’ opinions until the 20th of this month.
