Democratic National Convention in Chicago from 19th to 22nd
Democratic Presidential Candidate Harris Delivers Official Acceptance Speech
U.S. President Joe Biden and former Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, among others, will all appear as speakers at next week's Democratic National Convention (DNC) to rally support for Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
On the 11th (local time), NBC reported, citing sources, that President Biden, former Presidents Obama and Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been confirmed as speakers at the Democratic National Convention to be held in Chicago from the 19th to the 22nd. Former President Jimmy Carter, who will celebrate his 100th birthday this October, will be represented by his grandson Jason Carter at the podium due to health reasons.
Ahead of the November presidential election, they are expected to collectively label former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, as a "threat to democracy" and urge support for Vice President Harris, the Democratic nominee. This contrasts sharply with last month's Republican National Convention (RNC), which was widely regarded as Trump's coronation, where no former Republican presidents appeared. Instead, former President Trump was joined by nearly his entire family, from his children and daughters-in-law to his grandchildren.
Backed by the full support of current and former presidents, Vice President Harris will accept the Democratic Party's official presidential nomination and deliver a speech at this convention. The strategy is to further boost her recent momentum.
Challenging to become the first female president in U.S. history, Vice President Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate after receiving 99% support from participating delegates in an online roll call vote earlier this month. Last week, she selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, known for his "pro-working-class" stance, as her running mate and conducted joint campaign visits to key battleground states.
According to a New York Times (NYT) and Siena College poll released on the 10th, Harris's support in the three battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin stood at 50%, surpassing former President Trump’s 46%. This marks a clear shift from the atmosphere following last month’s assassination attempt on Trump, when public opinion suggested the Republicans had solidified their advantage in the "Democratic Biden vs. Republican Trump" race.
Vice President Harris, whose momentum has recently increased, also slightly leads former President Trump within the margin of error in the economic policy area, which had been pointed out as a weakness. In a poll released by the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Harris and Trump received 42% and 41% support respectively for their economic policies.
However, 60% of survey respondents indicated that Harris should deviate from or make significant changes to President Biden’s economic policy direction. This suggests that Harris’s policy pledges, which are seen as a continuation of Biden’s approach, still face challenges to be resolved. In the same poll last month, President Biden’s approval rating was only 35%.
