"K-Content Has Something That Resonates Worldwide"… Disney Plus Increasing Investment in Korea

Interview with Schreier, President of Global TV Strategy Division
"Looking Forward to Kangpul's New Webtoon-Based Work 'Jomyeonggage'"

"Korean content, movies, television, and music have something that resonates with people worldwide beyond Korea. We expect more success stories like the drama 'Moving' in the future."

On the 9th (local time), at the Disney 'D23: Global Fan Event' held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, USA, Eric Schrier, President of Disney Plus (+) Global Original TV Strategy, praised K-content with these words during a meeting with Korean reporters. President Schrier oversees the production of original content for Disney Plus. He said, "Korean content plays a very important role in Disney's global content strategy," adding, "Global audiences recognize and respond to the value of this Korean content."

As a representative example, he cited the Korean drama 'Moving,' an original content of Disney+. 'Moving' is based on a webtoon by writer Kang Full and became the most popular original series outside the United States on Disney+ last year. Disney+ achieved this success in just over two years since entering the Korean market in November 2021. Regarding this, Disney CEO Bob Iger separately mentioned during the earnings conference call in November last year, "The Korean original series 'Moving' has achieved incredibly great results worldwide on Disney+."

President Schrier revealed plans to continue producing blockbuster productions with top actors by investing large budgets in Korea. Although he did not disclose the specific scale of investment, he emphasized, "You will see Disney's investment in Korea continue to increase." He also added, "The proportion of Korean content in the total content investment in the Asia region is overwhelmingly high."

At this event, he also expressed anticipation for the new series 'Jomyunggage' based on Kang Full's webtoon. Recalling his visit to Korea and meeting with Kang Full, Schrier said, "During our conversation, I felt Kang Full's sincere passion for his story," adding, "He is an excellent producer, and I am very much looking forward to his next work, 'Jomyunggage'." This work is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year. In addition, Disney+ plans to release Park Hoon-jung's 'Pokgun' and the comedy 'Trigger' starring actress Kim Hye-soo within this year. Also, 'Bukgeukseong' starring Jun Ji-hyun and Kang Dong-won, and 'Nine Puzzle' starring Kim Da-mi and Son Seok-gu are scheduled for release in the first half of next year.
