From 'Aetchak Moja' to 'Beer Can Cooler'... Competing with Merchandise Sales in the US Presidential Election

Wolz's 'Attachment Hat' Sold Out in 30 Minutes
Trump Sells Sneakers, T-Shirts, and More

With the U.S. presidential election just three months away, the Democratic and Republican candidates are fiercely competing off the field through the sale of 'goods.'

On the 9th (local time), political media outlet The Hill reported that the Harris-Walz campaign began selling camouflage beer can coolers. Priced at $15 (about 20,500 KRW), this product features a camouflage pattern used for military concealment and prominently displays the Harris-Walz name in orange.

The camouflage-patterned hat is one of the fashion items frequently worn by Governor Walz, who has become a symbol of the 'average American.' Governor Walz appeared wearing a similar hat in the video where Vice President Harris announced him as her running mate. The campaign immediately began producing souvenirs after the hat attracted public attention in the video, and Walz shared a photo wearing the hat on his social media platform X right after his first Philadelphia rally on the 5th.

Right after announcing Governor Walz as her running mate, the Harris campaign sold 3,000 'camo hats' of the same design, which sold out in less than 30 minutes. The hats sold on the campaign website are priced at $40 (about 55,000 KRW) and described as 'America’s most iconic political hat, made in the USA, union-made,' with proceeds going to the Harris Victory Fund.

Until now, the Trump campaign had earned massive revenue from merchandise sales. However, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race and the emergence of Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, the Democrats have also stepped up their efforts to sell election souvenirs.

Former President Trump, whose main support base is the far-right MAGA (Make America Great Again) fandom, earned huge profits early in the campaign by selling various souvenirs. Earlier this year, he sold golden sneakers for $399 (about 545,000 KRW), which sold out. After a shooting incident during a public rally on the 13th of last month, he quickly produced and sold various products, including T-shirts and sneakers featuring a photo of him with blood on his face and a clenched fist, turning them into revenue.

Previously, in August last year, after being indicted in Georgia on charges related to overturning the 2020 election results and taking a so-called 'mugshot' (a criminal booking photo), former President Trump sold shirts and trading cards featuring that photo, raising substantial campaign funds.
