African nation Botswana declared the afternoon of the 9th (local time) a temporary holiday to celebrate winning its first-ever Olympic gold medal in history.

President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi of Botswana announced on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he would designate the afternoon as a temporary holiday to celebrate Botswana's first Olympic gold medal.

President Masisi also expressed gratitude to the athlete who brought Botswana its first Olympic gold medal, sprinter Lechile Tebogo (21). He said, "This will be engraved in the timeline of the Republic's history," emphasizing, "History has been made. Thanks to the amazing Lechile Tebogo, my voice is completely hoarse from shouting so much."

Earlier, Tebogo won the men's 200m final in athletics at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at Stade de France in Paris, France, setting a new African record of 19.46 seconds. He became not only Botswana's but also the African continent's first Olympic men's 200m champion.
