High School Student Driving 100km Recklessly Without a License in Mom's Car

Two Teens Driving 40km from Incheon to Gimpo
Police: "Not Drunk Driving or Juvenile Delinquent"

A high school student was caught by the police for driving 40km without a license using his mother's vehicle.

On the 9th, the Gimpo Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested and is investigating a teenager, identified as A, on charges of unlicensed driving under the Road Traffic Act, according to Yonhap News Agency. A is accused of driving a Volkswagen vehicle owned by his mother for about 40 kilometers from near Incheon Jemulpo Station, through the Incheon-Gimpo Expressway, to Gimpo around 7 a.m. that day. Two other teenagers, presumed to be A's friends, were also passengers in the vehicle at the time.

A citizen who witnessed the incident reported to 112, saying, "There is a vehicle speeding recklessly at over 100 km/h." The police, who responded to the call, pursued the vehicle and eventually apprehended A on a road in Tongjin-eup, Gimpo. A reportedly told the police, "I secretly took my mom's car out." The police escorted A to a nearby police substation and handed him over to his family. A police official told Yonhap News Agency, "A did not drive under the influence, and he is not a juvenile offender under the law," adding, "We plan to summon A again soon to investigate the details."

Meanwhile, there was a recent case where a teenager was caught by the police after overturning a rental car while driving without a license. On the 23rd of last month, the Wonmi Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, announced that it is investigating a teenager, identified as B, on charges of unlicensed driving under the Road Traffic Act. B is accused of driving a rental car without a license at around 2:20 a.m. at the Sang-dong intersection in Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, and crashing into an apartment exterior wall and trees. Besides B, three other teenage passengers were in the rental car. The accident caused the rental car to overturn, injuring B and the three passengers, who are receiving treatment at a hospital. It was revealed that B caused the accident by turning left at the intersection and driving onto the sidewalk on the right side.

The police responded to a report from another driver who suspected "drunk driving" and apprehended B and others at the scene. The circumstances under which they rented the car despite not having a license have not been disclosed. A police official said, "B was not driving under the influence," and added, "It appears the accident was caused by inexperienced driving." B and the others are in stable condition, and the police plan to investigate them once they complete their treatment.
