Autonomous delivery robots developed by Hyundai Motor Company and Kia successfully demonstrated crossing a pedestrian crosswalk. The robots recognized traffic signal information by integrating with the traffic system and safely crossed the crosswalk. This is the first demonstration since related laws were amended in South Korea, allowing autonomous delivery robots to use traffic signal information to cross pedestrian crosswalks. The demonstration took place at a crosswalk in front of Bugok Police Substation in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Robotics Lab linked their control system with the real-time traffic signal collection and provision system provided by the National Police Agency. They developed technology to control the robots according to traffic signals. Based on traffic signal information, the system calculates the sequence of traffic light changes and waiting times in advance, informing the robot of the optimal route that reduces travel time. The robot uses autonomous driving technology to avoid people and obstacles while following the route.

The control system is designed to manage multiple robots simultaneously. Using AI vision technology embedded in the robots, the system performs an additional verification of on-site signal information. To accurately perceive the surroundings, two LiDAR units and four camera modules are used.
