Pohang City and North Gyeongsang Province Begin Service for Basic Plan to Establish Digital Yeongilman Art Valley

The meeting, attended by over 30 people including Vice Mayor Jang Sangkil and officials from Pohang City and North Gyeongsang Province, provided an opportunity to discuss the direction of the project and gather opinions.

The city plans to establish a digital art platform that combines the region's natural marine resources with digital technology on an artificial island to be created in the middle of the sea where the tunnel and bridge of the Yeongilman Bridge, scheduled for completion in 2034, will meet. Together with North Gyeongsang Province, Pohang is conducting a basic concept research service for the creation of the ‘Digital Yeongilman Art Valley’.

The city aims to move beyond the traditional focus on artistic achievements in art valleys by creating a ‘Digital Art Valley’ that comprehensively connects culture, art, commerce, and tourism, providing a space for communication with citizens, integrating culture and consumption, and serving as a sustainable tourism resource.

Plans are in place to link various tourism resources along the 215 km of scenic coastline, including Yeongildae Beach, Space Walk, the Homigot Hands of Harmony sunrise spot, the Millennium Memorial Hall, and the Yeonorangsaeonyeo Theme Park, to the Digital Art Valley.

In particular, by operating unique programs that merge traditional industries such as steel with new key industries (batteries, AI, ICT), similar to examples like CES, the world’s largest ICT convergence exhibition, the project will serve as a catalyst for the smooth implementation of Pohang’s ‘New Industry Development Strategy Master Plan’, including the secondary battery industry mega-cluster and the Pan-East Sea bio-industry convergence cluster.

To this end, the research service will proceed through stages such as ▲ analysis of the current regional status ▲ establishment of the basic project concept plan ▲ legal, technical, and economic feasibility review, aiming to draw suitable conclusions and build a sustainable operational process by operating expert consultative bodies and forums to further refine policies and strategies.

Vice Mayor Jang Sangkil said, “In line with the long-awaited completion of the Yeongilman Bridge for Pohang citizens, we will create the Digital Yeongilman Art Valley utilizing advanced digital technology and turn the Yeongilman Bridge into a world-class landmark and tourism resource.”
