Youth Focus on Urban Issues... Present New Perspectives and Solutions

On the 9th, Pohang City held the Pohang Greenway Youth Forum, attended by about 100 citizens including local youth and experts.
This forum, which has been held since 2022 to enhance the effectiveness of policy club activities in middle and high schools regarding the Pohang Greenway Project, was themed "Forests and Roads, Transforming the City" this year. It presented various solutions to urban issues from the perspective of youth.
This event featured five teams from three schools?Daedong Middle School, Saemyeong High School, and Idong High School?each delivering presentations on their chosen topics.
From Daedong Middle School's policy club "Bombom," students Jeong Dan and Kim Juhan presented on "Urban Temperature as Competitiveness: Our Neighborhood Urban Forest Project," proposing the creation of mini gardens in local neighborhoods and themed urban forests along the coast to strengthen the city's climate change response.
From Saemyeong High School's policy club "Greenway," students Yoon Yugyeong and Choi Jiwon presented "Green Innovation in Songdo: Green Lights for All," analyzing the issues in Songdo from a youth perspective and suggesting alternatives such as improving transportation infrastructure and creating multi-purpose cultural spaces, which received positive feedback from the citizens attending the forum.
Three teams from Pohang Idong High School's policy club "Greenway" also gave presentations.
Students Park Minha and Choi Yunso, with the theme "Invitation to Greenway: Greenway School," proposed revitalizing the coastal village by repurposing the closed Igari School in Cheongha-myeon and connecting it with youth clubs. Students Kim Gayoung and Kim Gaeun, in their presentation "Kkumtle-ro: A Youth Cultural and Art Space Created by Commons," suggested creating spaces and participation programs to activate Kkumtle-ro.
Students Han Seungmin and Lee Seungeun, with the topic "TRAVER BY TRAM - From Homigot to Ttangkkeut Village," proposed developing programs that connect nearby tourist attractions using trams to promote coastal tourism.
In the second part of the event, Professor Kim Juil from Handong Global University's Department of Spatial Environmental Systems Engineering served as moderator. Panelists included Kang Moonkoo, Director of the Regional Regeneration Research Institute; Yoon Yongchan, Director of Jeonghyeon Landscape Architecture Office; and Yoon Kiwoong, Director of the Social Cooperative Forest and People. These experts in urban, green space, youth, and culture fields engaged in a discussion with youth on the future of Pohang as a sustainable green ecological city.
Kim Eungsoo, Head of the Green City Project Group, stated, "The Pohang Greenway Project has achieved significant results not only in expanding green spaces but also in revitalizing the local economy and improving the quality of life for citizens. We will actively review the valuable suggestions made by youth, who represent the future of Pohang, so that they can be reflected in actual policies."
