Over 100 Taegeukgi-Related Artifacts on Display... Liberation Day Commemorative Concert Also Held
Yangsan City Independence Memorial Hall in Gyeongnam will hold a special exhibition titled 'Our Taegeukgi' to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Liberation and the 1st anniversary of the memorial hall's opening. The exhibition will take place on the second floor of the Independence Memorial Hall's special exhibition room starting from the 15th for about four months.
This event is designed to introduce the birth of the Taegeukgi, the symbol of the Republic of Korea, and its various transformations throughout history alongside the Korean people. It aims to enhance citizens' pride by fostering interest and understanding of the Taegeukgi.
The exhibition is divided into four sections. The first section, 'Taegeukgi in History,' explores the process leading up to the official proclamation of the national flag in 1883 and the appearance of the Taegeukgi in early promotional materials. The second section, 'Hopes Contained in the Taegeukgi,' looks at how, during the difficult period when national sovereignty was lost to Japanese colonial rule and the nation faced obliteration, the Taegeukgi became a symbol of national identity and resilience against oppression.
The third section, 'Becoming a National Symbol,' covers the process by which the Taegeukgi was established in its current design after liberation and how, during the Korean War, the flag embodied the desperate hopes and unwavering belief in victory. The final section, 'Our Taegeukgi,' showcases how the Taegeukgi has become a part of everyday life.
Notably, this special exhibition will feature, for the first time, the Taegeukgi of Monk Manwoo, who served as the first head monk of Tongdosa Temple before and after liberation. Over 100 Taegeukgi-related artifacts, including the Taegeukgi of Korean War refugees (registered as a cultural heritage in Gyeonggi Province), will be on display. During the exhibition period, hands-on activities such as coloring Taegeukgi by era and stamping Taegeuk patterns on Taegeukgi postcards will also be offered.
Additionally, to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Liberation and the 1st anniversary of the City Independence Memorial Hall, a commemorative music concert will be held at 7 p.m. on the 15th, Liberation Day, on the special outdoor stage (parking lot) of the Independence Memorial Hall. The concert will feature a variety of musical genres as part of a program designed to share the meaning of the special exhibition and Liberation with citizens.
Shin Yongcheol, Director of the Independence Memorial Hall, said, "Within just one year of opening, Yangsan City Independence Memorial Hall has passed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's public museum feasibility evaluation and completed museum registration. We have prepared this Taegeukgi special exhibition and Liberation Day commemorative concert to repay the support shown by citizens, and we hope many will participate."
On the 15th, Liberation Day, both the permanent and special exhibition halls will be open for night viewing. For more information, contact the Independence Memorial Hall team at Yangsan City Museum for detailed guidance.
