Daejeon City Urges Adherence to Personal Quarantine Guidelines Amid COVID-19 Resurgence

Daejeon City has urged residents to strictly follow personal quarantine guidelines as the number of hospitalized patients with novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past four weeks has surged by 5.1 times.

According to a survey by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) of 220 sample monitoring institutions with more than 200 beds nationwide, the number of new COVID-19 hospitalizations increased from 91 in the first week of July, to 148 in the second week, 225 in the third week, and 465 in the fourth week?an increase of 5.1 times over the past four weeks.

The detection rate of the Omicron variant KP3, which is currently driving the domestic COVID-19 outbreak, rose sharply from 12.1% in June to 39.8% in July. Most of these cases are among seniors aged 65 and older.

In addition, other infectious diseases such as pertussis and hand, foot, and mouth disease are spreading, making it essential to strictly adhere to personal quarantine guidelines.

Personal quarantine guidelines include: △wearing a mask △proper handwashing △covering your nose and mouth with your sleeve when coughing △ventilating and disinfecting spaces △seeking medical care and staying home while minimizing contact with others if symptoms develop △and getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

Since May, Daejeon City has been operating an emergency summer quarantine system, monitoring the outbreak of infectious diseases and establishing a rapid response system to focus on preventing the spread of infections.

The city is also operating 21 national isolation beds for severe COVID-19 patients and 8 emergency treatment beds.

The city plans to begin timely COVID-19 vaccinations for seniors aged 65 and older in October.

Son Cheolwoong, Director of Sports and Health at Daejeon City, said, "With increased use of air conditioning during summer leading to poor ventilation and more close contact between people, respiratory infections such as COVID-19 are expected to continue for the time being. Especially with many citizens expected to attend the Daejeon 0-si Festival, which opens on the 9th, we ask everyone to thoroughly follow personal quarantine guidelines such as handwashing and wearing masks."
