‘The Best Welfare Is Jobs,’ Attracting Advanced Jobs in the 4th Industrial Revolution to Become a ‘Center of New Economy Jobs’
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it proudly won the “Excellence Award” at the “2024 National Local Government Job Awards” held on the 8th at EL Tower in Yangjae-dong.
This award is especially meaningful as it marks the first time in six years since receiving the Excellence Award in 2018. With this, the district has firmly established its position as a leading local government in job policy.
Under the vision of the 8th elected administration, “Yeongdeungpo, a future city full of vitality through jobs,” administrative efforts were focused on creating quality jobs and discovering job policies most needed by residents. Mayor Choi Ho-kwon stated, “The best welfare is jobs, and the starting point of urban development is also jobs,” demonstrating a strong commitment to job creation and governance based on this principle.
The “2024 National Local Government Job Awards” annually selects and honors local governments that have achieved significant results in job policy implementation over the year and have presented job project models tailored to regional characteristics.
So far, Yeongdeungpo-gu has shown remarkable achievements, ranking first among Seoul’s districts in employment rate and female employment rate in the “2023 Regional Employment Survey for the First and Second Half of the Year,” exceeding the initial job creation target by 105%.
In particular, the district received high praise for utilizing three major channels?online, offline, and metaverse?in the youth job sector. Additionally, efforts to strengthen youth employment and entrepreneurship capabilities through initiatives such as the Youth Startup Idea Contest, support for isolated and reclusive youth independence, and Seoul’s first Youth Architecture School helped the youth employment rate rank second in Seoul. Currently, the district supports unemployed youth by subsidizing up to 100,000 KRW annually for exam fees for about 900 language and qualification tests, becoming a reliable supporter for young people.
Other praised initiatives include ▲a 145% increase in the budget for customized employment education compared to the previous year ▲hosting the largest-ever job fair ▲operating an integrated job support center providing consolidated private and public job information ▲strengthening self-sustainability through market development for small and medium-sized businesses ▲and customized job policies for vulnerable employment groups.
The district has not only increased the number of jobs but also created quality jobs and laid the foundation for job expansion by solidifying cooperation with the private sector.
Based on these achievements, the district plans to attract future advanced jobs to transform Yeongdeungpo into a cutting-edge smart valley with close proximity between residence and workplace and a new growth hub for the 4th industrial revolution.
Mayor Choi Ho-kwon of Yeongdeungpo-gu said, “I am extremely pleased to achieve this award after six years as a result of managing the district with the belief that jobs are the best welfare,” adding, “We will continue to implement policies to revitalize the local economy and create jobs, making Yeongdeungpo a premium new economic city in the southwest region.”
