Gyeonggi Province has decided to operate the Gyeonggi Library, which will open in the second half of next year, as a climate and environmental library to raise awareness of the climate crisis. In the video contest held from April 30 to June 14 under the theme "Connecting the Next 100 Years with Ecology and Environment" to discover related content, the grand prize was awarded to "Plastic Friends (PLASTIC FRIENDS)."
Gyeonggi Province announced the nine winning works of the ‘2024 Gyeonggi Library Ecology and Environment Video + AI Contest,’ the first video contest utilizing artificial intelligence (AI).
Gyeonggi Province plans to operate the Gyeonggi Library, opening in the second half of next year, as a climate and environment library to raise awareness of the climate crisis. To discover related content, it held a video contest under the theme ‘Connecting the Next 100 Years with Ecology and Environment’ from April 30 to June 14. A total of 76 video creations were submitted for this contest.
Gyeonggi Province formed a judging committee composed of private experts, selected 15 candidate works, and after public verification, online voting, and final presentation judging, finalized nine works as winners.
The grand prize was awarded to ‘PLASTIC FRIENDS,’ created using AI technology. This work beautifully visualizes the sad stories of animals living as friends with plastic waste, and was praised for its original idea and technical completeness.
The excellence award went to ‘The Ghost,’ which used AI technology to depict abandoned ghost fishing gear as top predators attacking marine life underwater, highlighting the seriousness of the ghost gear problem. In the general category, ‘The Cursed Sky’s Table,’ which illustrated the issue of excessive food waste through graphic illustrations, was selected as a winning work.
Professor Choi Seong-won of Yongin University (Department of Media Design), chair of the contest judging committee, commented, “The creative approach using AI technology, which combines technology and art (Tech-Art), stood out. I realized that AI is a tool opening new horizons in video production, and this contest reminded us that videos are no longer the exclusive domain of creators but an innovative tool that anyone interested in video and AI can use to visualize their imagination.”
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province is promoting the construction of the Gyeonggi Library, aiming to open it in the second half of next year.
The Gyeonggi Library is located in Gyeonggi Convergence Town, Gwanggyo New Town, Iui-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon City, with a total floor area of 27,775㎡, consisting of four basement floors and five above-ground floors. Construction began in 2022, and the current progress rate is 60.40%. Gyeonggi Province plans to complete the building by the end of this year and, after preparation in the first half of next year, aims to open the Gyeonggi Library in the second half of next year.
