Daegu Democratic Party: "Prosecution Requests Reinvestigation of Hong Joonpyo... Prosecutor General Lee Wonsik Should Complete Investigation by the Book"

Suspicion of Non-Prosecution After Change of Daegu Police Chief

The Daegu branch of the Democratic Party issued a statement on the 8th, urging authorities to conduct an investigation in accordance with principles, noting, "The prosecution has requested the police to reinvestigate Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo's alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act."

The Daegu Democratic Party stated, "The issue is very simple. The question is whether the current head of a local government violated Article 86, Paragraph 5 of the Public Official Election Act (Prohibition of acts by public officials that may influence elections). Paragraph 5 stipulates that 'except for four specific cases, the head of a local government must not publish, distribute, or broadcast more than one type of promotional material per quarter,'" they pointed out.

The Daegu branch of the Democratic Party continued, "Looking at the posts Mayor Hong uploaded to Daegu TV at the beginning of his term, it is clear that these were simply for his own promotion. According to the report by NoCut News, it is evident that several promotional materials were posted on Daegu TV simultaneously (in violation of the one type, one time rule), such as Tsundere, New Year's Gathering, New Year's Reception, and Opening Ceremony." They added, "Furthermore, it was confirmed at the time by Spicks Daegu that the video promotional materials were posted both on Daegu TV and on Mayor Hong's personal YouTube channel, Hongkakola."

The Daegu branch of the Democratic Party raised suspicions, stating, "It is a very clear fact that the limit of one type, one time per quarter was exceeded, yet the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency did not even conduct a summons investigation of Mayor Hong. The former chief of the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency told reporters that he would refer Mayor Hong to the prosecution, but after the chief was replaced, the case was not referred. This is highly questionable. Didn't the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency even conduct a search and seizure of Daegu City Hall over this matter?"

The Daegu branch of the Democratic Party further stated, "If the case was not referred, was the police just putting on a show? Or is the police bowing down to Mayor Hong? The prosecution's order for a reinvestigation is positive in that it affirms the law is equal before everyone. With a new Prosecutor General coming in, Lee Wonsuk, who has said that the law should be enforced according to principles and equally for everyone, must see this case through to the end before stepping down," they urged.
