Forced Apology Videos and Threats to Reveal Family Information
Plans to Recover Criminal Proceeds Including Donations Underway
A man in his 30s who unlawfully disclosed the identities of perpetrators involved in the group sexual assault of a female middle school student that occurred 20 years ago in Miryang, Gyeongnam, has been arrested.
On the 8th, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency arrested a man in his 30s, identified as YouTuber A, on charges including violation of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation), according to a report by Yonhap News Agency on the same day.
A is accused of unlawfully disclosing the identities of the perpetrators of the Miryang sexual assault case on his YouTube channel "Jeontu Tokki" from June until last month. He is also charged with threatening some victims by stating that if they did not send apology videos, he would disclose the identities of their families as well. Last month, he identified a man, B, as a perpetrator of the Miryang case and revealed personal information including the building and unit number of the apartment where B lives, as well as the name of his workplace. After the video was released, B reportedly resigned from his job, and a large controversy erupted with numerous critical comments about him flooding the apartment community where he resides.
Since June 5, the police have received a total of 18 complaints and petitions against A and are currently investigating. They plan to transfer A to the prosecution soon after analyzing seized materials and confirming additional victim reports. Procedures to confiscate criminal proceeds such as donations are also underway.
The Miryang group sexual assault case occurred 20 years ago in 2004 in Miryang, Gyeongnam, where 44 high school students sexually assaulted one female middle school student over the course of a year. All perpetrators were sent to the prosecution on charges of special rape, but the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office indicted only 10 of them, while the remaining 34 were not prosecuted. The case recently regained attention as several YouTubers competed to disclose the perpetrators' identities. Some perpetrators lost their jobs or issued apologies, but the disclosure of information about the parties involved without the victims' consent caused secondary harm to the victims. There were also cases where innocent people were falsely identified as perpetrators.
Meanwhile, as of the 8th, a total of 618 complaints, petitions, and accusations related to the disclosure of the Miryang sexual assault case perpetrators' identities have been filed with the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency. Among them, 314 individuals are under investigation. The police have transferred 14 of these individuals to the prosecution and continue to investigate the remaining subjects.
