The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will announce the results of the athlete committee vote at 9 p.m. (Korean time) on the 8th at the 2024 Paris Olympics Main Press Center (MPC) located at the Palais des Congr?s in Paris, France. The outcome of Park In-bee, who campaigned alongside 28 candidates from around the world representing Korea, will be revealed.
Park In-bee began her campaign on the 18th of last month with the official opening of the Olympic Village and concluded the election schedule on the 7th. During this period, athletes participating in this Olympics elected four athlete committee members to join the IOC. Park In-bee became the final candidate for the IOC athlete committee vote last November after being selected by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee and passing the IOC’s final verification. The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic women’s golf gold medalist Park In-bee appealed for votes by visiting the Olympic Village and various venues during the 20-day election period.
If Park In-bee is elected as an IOC athlete committee member, she will represent Korea in the sports world, succeeding IOC athlete committee member Yoo Seung-min, whose term ends this year. She will become the third Korean athlete committee member following former members Moon Dae-sung (Taekwondo, 2008?2016) and Yoo. Moon was elected during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and Yoo during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Korea currently has three IOC members: Lee Ki-heung, president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee; Kim Jae-yeol, president of the International Skating Union; and Yoo. If Park In-bee is not elected, the number of Korean IOC members will decrease to two. IOC athlete committee members are Olympians who represent athletes within the IOC. They receive the same treatment as regular IOC members. The term of office is eight years.
