Pearl Abyss Reports 5.8 Billion KRW Operating Loss in Q2 Due to Increased Advertising Expenses

Pearl Abyss announced on the 8th that it recorded consolidated sales of 81.8 billion KRW and an operating loss of 5.8 billion KRW in the second quarter of this year.

Sales increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year, and the operating loss was due to increased advertising expenses. Net profit turned positive to 9.1 billion KRW compared to the same period last year.

The proportion of overseas sales was 82%. By platform, sales were 75% from PC, 21% from mobile, and 4% from console.

The core IP, Black Desert, celebrated its 10th anniversary by holding an event in the real-world Heidel city, ‘France Beynac,’ expanding the enjoyment of the online game to offline and receiving positive responses from users in North America and Europe. The game content was also steadily revamped, establishing guild war content ‘Node War,’ a guaranteed enhancement system, and a comfortable play environment.

In the third quarter, Pearl Abyss plans to strengthen live services for Black Desert and the EVE IP.

To this end, Pearl Abyss participated in China’s largest game show, ‘ChinaJoy 2024,’ in July together with the local publisher Tencent to conduct pre-marketing for the launch of Black Desert in China.

Recently, they introduced a large-scale update for Black Desert called ‘Land of Morning: Seoul.’ Set against the backdrop of old Seoul, including Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, it added uniquely Korean leaders and other enjoyable content. The global version will be localized and updated sequentially.

In particular, Pearl Abyss plans to hold a B2C demonstration event for the new title ‘Red Desert’ at the global game show ‘Gamescom 2024’ held in Germany at the end of this month.

Jo Seok-woo, Pearl Abyss Chief Financial Officer (CFO), said, "This year, we will continue to achieve results through ongoing changes in Black Desert and EVE," adding, "We will also begin full-scale marketing for the successful launch of new IPs."
