'Climbing' Lee Do-hyun, 17th in Lead... 15th in Combined Total, Fails to Advance to Finals

Lee Dohyun (21, Seoul City Hall, Black Yak), who was expected to win South Korea's first Olympic medal in sports climbing, ended his competition in the semifinal.

On the 7th (local time) at the Le Bourget Climbing Venue in Paris, France, Lee Dohyun scored 12.0 points in the lead event of the men's combined (bouldering + lead) semifinal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 17th place.

Lee Dohyun, who scored 34.0 points in the bouldering semifinal held on the 5th and ranked 10th out of 20 competitors, failed to advance to the final with a combined score of 46.0 points in bouldering and lead, placing 15th overall.

In the sports climbing combined semifinal, the scores of bouldering and lead, each out of 100 points, are combined, and the top 8 athletes earn tickets to the final.

Lee Dohyun, who has shown strength in bouldering, failed to top any of the four problems in the bouldering event earlier. In the lead event on the same day, he slipped midway, leaving only a low score and failing to complete the climb.

Lee Dohyun, the silver medalist in the men's combined at the Hangzhou Asian Games, is ranked 3rd in bouldering, 10th in lead, and 8th overall in the combined world rankings.

Bouldering is an event where athletes must pass through artificial holds installed on a 4.5-meter-high climbing wall within a set time, and the lead event held that day is a competition to climb as high as possible on holds installed on a 15-meter-high wall within 6 minutes.

The athletes who advanced to the final on this day will compete for medals in the combined final on the 9th. In the final, semifinal scores are reset, and both bouldering and lead events are completed in one day, with scores combined to determine the rankings.
