Yongin City Creates 'School Forest' at Heungdeok Elementary and Jungang Yedam School

Creating Student and Resident Rest Areas by Utilizing Spare Spaces

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 7th that it has created 'school forests' at Heungdeok Elementary School in Giheung-gu and Jungang Yedam School in Sanghyeon-dong, Suji-gu, which can be used as resting places for students and residents together.

The newly established school forests utilize leftover spaces within the school or along commuting routes by planting various trees and plants and providing rest areas.

At Heungdeok Elementary School, 200 million KRW was invested to create an urban garden by planting trees such as Japanese maple and tri-colored willow, as well as various plants like hydrangea, gaura, and moss phlox in leftover spaces next to the sidewalk used as a commuting path. The garden also features a model railway walking path and stone slabs engraved with animal shapes.

At Jungang Yedam School, a resting area was created in leftover spaces within the school. Part of the playground was used to build a deck walking path, and plants such as nandina, evergreen shrubs, boxwood, emerald green, and coreopsis were planted. A gazebo was also installed for students and residents to relax. The total project cost was 90 million KRW.

A city official stated, "We will continue to increase green spaces that students and residents can use together by utilizing leftover spaces in and around schools."
