Recognizing the Historical Value Shared Through Long Years of Glory and Shame
The old giant tree (노거수) 'Gunsan Haje Village Zelkova Tree,' which has shared the history of Gunsan City, Jeonbuk, has been announced for designation as a Nationally Designated Natural Heritage Natural Monument.
According to Gunsan City on the 7th, the designation announcement recognized the historical value of the old natural object, the giant tree. The comprehensive considerations included its deep connection with Korea's unique lifestyle, excellent size and beautiful shape, and the love it receives from village residents.
Haje Village in Gunsan is located at the southern tip of Okseo-myeon, Gunsan City, and became land from an island through reclamation projects starting in the early 1900s. This village once formed a large community with about 2,000 residents, but as military facilities were established, villagers left, and now only the Zelkova tree stands alone guarding the village.

According to a 2020 age survey by the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute, this tree was measured to be 537 (±50) years old in 2020. It was found to be the oldest among Zelkova trees whose age was confirmed by tree rings. The tree measures 20 meters in height and 7.5 meters in circumference at breast height, with excellent growth conditions. It boasts a majestic appearance and a very beautiful tree form.
The Haje Village Zelkova tree has steadfastly stood in one place from the time when the village prospered with the establishment of a port and the arrival of trains, to the present when villagers gradually left and the village disappeared. Due to this outstanding historical value, it was first designated as a Jeonbuk Provincial Monument in June 2021.
The National Heritage Agency plans to designate it as a Natural Monument after collecting opinions during a 30-day announcement period and undergoing review by the Natural Heritage Committee.
Meanwhile, Gunsan City is making various efforts such as securing national funds and enacting related ordinances for the excavation and preservation of national heritage to confirm Gunsan's nature and history.
A Gunsan City official stated, "This announcement for designation as a Natural Monument is the result of continuous interest from citizens and efforts from various sectors," adding, "Gunsan City will continue to do its best in preserving and managing the Zelkova tree and natural heritage."
