LG Products and Services to Launch in Second Half with ExaOne 3.0

LG AI Research Institute has open-sourced its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, 'ExaOne 3.0'. In the second half of the year, it plans to launch products and services equipped with ExaOne 3.0 in collaboration with major affiliates such as LG Electronics. To prepare for the 'AI Everyday Era Transition,' the AI Research Institute has also started a beta service of the generative AI 'ChatExaOne' for employees.

On the 7th, LG AI Research Institute released a technical report detailing the training methods and performance evaluation results of the ExaOne 3.0 model. This comes one year and one month after the announcement of the large language model (LLM) ExaOne 2.0 in July last year. Both performance and cost-efficiency have been upgraded. Compared to ExaOne 2.0, inference processing time was reduced by 56%, memory usage by 35%, and operating costs by 72%. The model size was reduced to 1/100th of the initial large model, significantly lowering power consumption.

In the ExaOne 3.0 technical report, the institute disclosed scores from 25 benchmarks used for evaluation, including representative benchmarks such as MT-Bench, along with individual scores and average scores by category. It ranked first in 13 benchmarks covering practical usability, coding, mathematics, and more. It also proved competitive when compared with global open-source AI models of the same size, such as Meta's LLaMA 3.1 and Google's Gemma 2. Notably, its Korean language performance was the best in the world.

ExaOne 3.0 was trained on over 60 million data points from specialized domestic and international fields including patents, software code, mathematics, and chemistry. LG AI Research Institute plans to expand training data to over 100 million by the end of the year, covering fields such as law, bio, medical, education, and foreign languages.

Starting in the second half of the year, LG AI Research Institute will apply ExaOne 3.0 to products and services of LG affiliates. Ultra-lightweight models for on-device AI, general lightweight models, and high-performance models will be optimized for each company to suit the characteristics of their businesses, products, and services. Discussions on global partnerships are also underway.

Baek Gwang-hoon, head of LG AI Research Institute, stated, "With ExaOne, which offers specialized performance and cost-efficiency, we plan to strengthen partnerships with LG affiliates, external companies, and institutions. By open-sourcing a self-developed AI model for the first time in Korea, we aim to enable academia, research institutions, and startups to utilize the latest generative AI technology, thereby revitalizing an open AI research ecosystem and contributing to enhancing the nation's AI competitiveness."

LG announced that it will start the ChatExaOne beta service for employees from today. ChatExaOne is a generative AI service based on ExaOne 3.0. It provides real-time web information-based Q&A, document and image-based Q&A, coding, and database management functions. It applies the 'Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)' technology, which uses real-time web search results. After understanding the context of the instructions entered by employees, it provides answers reflecting the latest information. ChatExaOne also offers features for software developers and data analysis experts.

The institute plans to continue the ChatExaOne beta service until the end of the year, regularly updating it based on employee feedback. The official service and mobile application will be provided sequentially according to the preparation status of each LG affiliate.

LG CEO Koo Kwang-mo has identified AI as a future business focus and emphasizes bold investment and innovation. Since establishing the LG AI Research Institute, the think tank for group AI research, in December 2020, LG has accelerated AI transformation over four years. It is increasing the application of AI technology across business sites of each affiliate, including production processes, materials and product development, and customer service improvement.
