Paraguay Team Leader "Creating an Inappropriate Atmosphere"
Paraguayan swimming team athlete Luana Alonso (20) has reportedly been expelled from the 2024 Paris Olympic Village due to "inappropriate behavior." However, Alonso has denied the claims, calling them fake news.
Larissa Shearer, head of the Paraguayan delegation, announced on the 5th (local time) that Alonso had been removed from the Olympic Village. She explained the reason, saying, "Alonso, who was a national swimming representative, created an 'inappropriate atmosphere,'" and added, "We appreciate Alonso for complying with the instructions to leave."
This is Alonso's second Olympic appearance, and she is also a popular influencer with about 580,000 followers on Instagram and 490,000 on TikTok.
Alonso was eliminated in the women's 100m butterfly heats at the Paris Olympics held on the 27th of last month. Afterwards, she was reported to have engaged in inappropriate behavior around the Olympic Village. She left the Village without permission to visit Paris Disneyland, stayed at city hotels wearing revealing outfits, and was seen visiting luxury stores and restaurants.
As conflicts with the national team deepened, it appears that the Paraguayan swimming team revoked Alonso's national representative status. However, on the 6th, Alonso posted on her Instagram, stating, "No one has expelled me. Stop spreading fake news." Nonetheless, she deleted all the photos of Paris sightseeing that she had posted on her social media accounts.
Meanwhile, this is not the first case of an athlete being stripped of their national representative status due to violating rules or causing disturbances with sudden actions within the Olympic Village. Previously, on the 28th of last month, Brazilian swimmer Carolina Vieira was expelled from the Village. Vieira was reportedly caught leaving the Village without permission to tour Paris together with her boyfriend and fellow Brazilian swimming team member, Gabriel Santos.
After news of her expulsion broke, Vieira told Brazilian local media that she had been "bullied within the team" and announced that she would take official legal action.
