Jungnang-gu Expands Road Water Cleaning Operations to Combat Heatwave

Emergency Response to Continuous Heatwave Alerts... Using Road Water Cleaning Vehicles to Lower Urban Temperatures

Jungnang-gu Expands Road Water Cleaning Operations to Combat Heatwave

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is expanding the operation of road water cleaning to respond to the continuous heatwave warnings. This is to reduce radiant heat and alleviate the urban heat island effect.

The district currently operates water cleaning vehicles once or twice a day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except during rainy weather. Due to the recent increase in heatwave warnings, the number of cleaning vehicle operations will be increased to 2 to 4 times a day, and the operation hours will be extended by one hour until 5:30 p.m.

Road water cleaning is currently being carried out mainly on major arterial roads, and small water cleaning vehicles are used to clean every corner of general roads and specialized streets such as Sangbong Meokja Alley.

In particular, starting in August, private water sprinklers will be additionally deployed in preparation for frequent heatwave warnings to do their best to protect residents' health from the heat.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “Research shows that road water cleaning can lower the road surface temperature by about 6.4°C and the surrounding sidewalks by about 1.5°C,” adding, “We will devote all efforts to summer water cleaning so that residents can spend a safe and healthy summer.”

The district held an emergency heatwave countermeasure meeting on the 2nd and is making various efforts such as operating Jungnang Ongdalsaem and heat relief shelters to help residents spend the summer more comfortably.
