Assessing Living Conditions and Human Rights of Developmentally Disabled for Welfare Policy Development
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "We Will Do Our Best to Help Disabled People Become Active Members of Society"
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that it will conduct a full survey of people with developmental disabilities in the area by October.
This survey was prepared to understand the living conditions and human rights of people with developmental disabilities, input and manage the results in the Integrated Welfare Information System, and use the data for establishing welfare support policies.
The survey targets 816 people with developmental disabilities aged 18 to 64 residing in Mapo-gu. The survey will be conducted face-to-face by public officials from the local community service centers visiting the residences of the subjects.
The survey items include personal information such as type of disability, benefit status, and living environment, as well as living and welfare needs such as use of welfare services, awareness of institutions, employment type, leisure activities, and human rights conditions including experiences of abuse.
If cases of human rights violations such as abuse are discovered during the survey, they will be immediately reported to the Mapo-gu general department and reported to the Seoul Metropolitan Disability Rights Advocacy Agency for appropriate action.
If it is difficult to accurately determine suspicion of human rights violations or if there are difficulties in the survey due to single-person households, the survey will be conducted accompanied by social workers from the Mapo Disabled Persons Comprehensive Welfare Center.
Customized support projects according to welfare needs will be linked to households of people with developmental disabilities after the visit survey is completed.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Our role is to help people with disabilities take a step forward as members of society,” adding, “Mapo-gu will listen more closely to the voices of people with disabilities and spare no support to help them feel real changes in their lives.”
Meanwhile, Mapo-gu has been operating the ‘Developmental Disabilities Cultural Creation Center’ since November 2022 to support cultural and artistic activities for people with developmental disabilities, and in April this year, it opened the ‘Nuguna Cultural Creation Center’ at Gongdeok Silppuri Welfare Center, receiving favorable reviews.
Along with this, the district is accelerating the establishment and operation of the ‘Silppuri Welfare’ system, which aims for meticulous welfare permeating residents’ lives, and is making every effort to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
