This is the challenge given to the lower-ranked players in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup rankings. The final regular-season tournament to determine the PO qualifiers, the Wyndham Championship (total prize money $7.9 million), will be held on the 8th (local time) at Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards) in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. Players must finish within the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings by performing well in this tournament to step onto the lucrative PO stage.
Top-ranked players such as Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele (both USA), and Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), who participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics, will not be competing. Similarly, Korean representatives who played in the Olympics, Byeonghun An (12th in FedEx Cup rankings with 1,755 points) and Juhyung Kim (40th with 1,051 points), are taking a break. Among the Olympic members, Shane Lowry (Ireland) is the only one listed to participate.
Korean players urgently needing points are Kyung-hoon Lee and Sung-hyun Kim. Kyung-hoon Lee finished in the top 10 for the third time this season two weeks ago at the 3M Open but remains 99th in the FedEx Cup rankings with 398 points. Sung-hyun Kim, who missed the cut at the 3M Open, is ranked 110th with 342 points. Considering that players ranked 60th to 70th have scores in the 600s, Lee and Kim must either win the Wyndham Championship, which awards 500 points to the winner, or finish among the top ranks to hope for PO qualification.
Seongjae Im and Siwoo Kim, who have already secured PO spots, are somewhat relaxed. However, they need to accumulate more points to advance to the Tour Championship, the final PO event. Im is ranked 9th in the FedEx Cup with 1,883 points, and Kim is 36th with 1,168 points.
The PO starts with the St. Jude Championship (total prize money $20 million) on the 15th, followed by the BMW Championship (total prize money $20 million) on the 22nd, and concludes with the Tour Championship (date TBD) on the 29th. The St. Jude Championship features the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup rankings. The BMW Championship allows the top 50, and the Tour Championship invites the top 30 players.
