Kim Junsu, Seo Kyungsoo, and Park Kanghyun will star as the main character Aladdin in the musical "Aladdin," which will premiere this November at the Charlotte Theater, the production company S&Co announced on the 6th.
S&Co stated that original creators including director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw visited Korea and held a total of 10 audition rounds with Korean creators, finalizing a cast of 37 performers.
The role of Genie will be played by actors Jung Sunghwa, Jung Wonyoung, and Kang Hongseok. For the role of Jasmine, actors Lee Sungkyung, Min Kyunga, and Choi Ji-hye were cast. Lee Sungkyung will make her musical stage debut as Aladdin.
The role of Sultan, Jasmine’s father and ruler of Agrabah, will be played by Lee Sangjun and Hwang Manik. The ambitious Jafar, who seeks to seize the throne, will be portrayed by Yoon Seonyong and Lim Byeol, and Jafar’s henchman Iago will be played by Jung Yeol. Additionally, Seo Manseok will appear as Kassim, Yuk Hyunwook as Omar, and Bang Boyong and Yang Byeongcheol as Babkak. Kassim, Omar, and Babkak are Aladdin’s friends and companions who assist him.
Director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw said, "This audition marked my first visit to beautiful Korea," and added, "I was amazed to meet such deep and rich talent." Co-director Ben Clare also expressed satisfaction, saying, "Korean actors’ talents are outstanding. Having worked with many productions and actors worldwide, the Korean cast of Aladdin, selected directly with Korean creators, is the finest I have seen."
The musical Aladdin is based on the animated film of the same name and premiered in 2011 in Seattle, USA. It debuted on Broadway in 2014 and has since been performed in 11 productions across 4 continents, attracting approximately 20 million viewers worldwide.
The Korean premiere of Aladdin will be held in two cities: Seoul and Busan. The Seoul performance will open on November 22 at the Charlotte Theater, with tickets scheduled to go on sale early next month. After a seven-month run in Seoul, the show will continue in July next year at the Busan Dream Theater.
