Winner of Hong Kong-Sweden Match and Semifinal Contenders
Korean women's table tennis team defeated Brazil to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympic team event.
Composed of Shin Yubin, Lee Eunhye, and Jeon Jihi, Korea overcame Brazil with a match score of 3-1 in the women's team round of 16 held on the 5th (local time) at the South Paris Arena in France. Brazil's team consisted of Japanese-descendant Bruna Takahashi, ranked 20th in the women's singles world ranking, her sister Giullia Takahashi, and Bruna Alexandre, who has no right arm and is competing in both the Olympics and Paralympics.

The pair of Shin Yubin and Jeon Jihi, gold medalists in women's doubles at last year's Hangzhou Asian Games, took the initiative in the first doubles match. Shin and Jeon defeated the Brazilian doubles team of Giullia and Alexandre in 20 minutes with a straight 3-0 victory (11-6, 11-5, 11-8).
In the following singles match, Lee Eunhye lost a close battle to Bruna with a score of 2-3 (8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 4-11).
The 'eldest sister' Jeon Jihi regained the lead by defeating Giullia 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-2) in the third singles match, and Lee Eunhye secured the victory in the fourth singles match to close out the quarterfinals. Lee Eunhye crushed Alexandre 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-6).
Korea will face the winner of the Hong Kong-Sweden match in the quarterfinals at 10 p.m. Korean time on the 6th. If they win the quarterfinals, there is a high possibility they will face the 'strongest' China in the semifinals.
The men's team will play against Croatia in the round of 16 at 5 p.m. on the 6th. Jang Woojin, Lim Jonghoon, and Cho Daeseong will participate. The men's team has a tougher draw than the women's team. If they overcome Croatia, they are expected to meet China in the quarterfinals.
