Commissioner Lee Myung-jun Inaugurated as the 18th Chief of the Seohae Regional Coast Guard

“West Sea Coast Guard, Commitment to Safe Marine Accident Response and Prevention”

Lee Myung-jun, Police Commissioner, was inaugurated as the 18th Commissioner of the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency.


The West Sea Maritime Police Agency announced that on the 5th at 3 p.m., it held an inauguration ceremony for the Commissioner in the agency's main conference room, attended by senior staff members.


At the inauguration ceremony, Commissioner Lee stated, "The southern West Sea and southwestern southern sea areas under the jurisdiction of the West Sea Agency are where the public's demand for maritime safety is highest, and where three major maritime accidents have occurred in the past." He added, "We will focus the capabilities of the West Sea Maritime Police Agency on preventing such large-scale maritime accidents as well as the recently increasing water leisure accidents, and on protecting the lives and safety of the people."

In particular, he emphasized, "When even a single citizen is in danger at sea, we must establish a rapid response system capable of immediate rescue, and strengthen realistic situational response training to prepare for large-scale accidents such as passenger ship incidents."


He further stated, "Since the West Sea EEZ experiences intense foreign fishing vessel operations and national interests related to maritime sovereignty are sharply at stake, we will focus on operating maritime security resources efficiently and strategically." To this end, he presented the key directions for the West Sea Maritime Police Agency, saying, "It is essential to perform field-centered work faithful to basics and principles, to be citizen-centered so that the public can trust and feel secure, and to carry out colleague-centered work through communication and harmony."


After the inauguration ceremony, Commissioner Lee immediately visited the command and control room to encourage the staff and received a security situation report for the southwestern sea area. He then conducted on-site inspections of high-risk facilities such as piers, which are heavily used during the summer vacation season, water surface leisure business sites, and breakwaters.


Commissioner Lee moved to Mokpo New Port, where he paid tribute to the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, then visited Noeul Park in Mokpo City to lay flowers and incense for the fallen maritime police officers, and also paid a courtesy visit to the Gyunghoe office.


Commissioner Lee Myung-jun, a graduate of the 43rd class of the Police Cadet Academy, is originally from Yeongam, Jeollanam-do. He graduated from Gwangju Dongsin High School and Korea Maritime University, and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. He joined the Maritime Police in 1995 and has served as Director of the Future Strategy Planning Division, Chief of Seogwipo and Busan Maritime Police Stations, Director of the Maritime Police Agency's Rescue and Safety Bureau, Commissioner of the East Sea and West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agencies, Director of the Maritime Police Agency's Security Bureau, and Planning and Coordination Officer, among other positions.
