Amid speculation that Iran's retaliatory attack against Israel is imminent, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) issued a statement on the 5th (local time) calling for de-escalation of tensions.
According to major foreign media on the day, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries?United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada?released a joint statement following a virtual meeting the previous day, expressing "deep concern over the heightened tensions in the Middle East region."
The G7 foreign ministers urged, "All relevant parties should refrain from continuing the destructive cycle of retaliatory violence and once again call for constructive engagement in de-escalation," adding, "No country can benefit from the escalation of tensions in the Middle East."
On the 31st of last month, Ismail Haniyeh, the top political leader of the Palestinian armed faction Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran, the capital of Iran. In response, Iran and Hamas have identified Israel as the party responsible for Haniyeh's assassination and declared 'bloody retaliation.' In particular, Iran is moving toward the brink of full-scale war by considering mobilizing regional proxy forces such as Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthi rebels to strengthen its offensive capabilities.
