Seocho-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will hold the ‘Kkaeal Eco Academy’ eco-friendly parent education program called ‘Parent Environmental School’ at Bangbae Forest Environmental Library from the 5th to the 8th of this month.
The Kkaeal Eco Academy, meaning ‘to realize and inform,’ was established with the purpose of having parents first learn about eco-friendliness to realize the importance of the environment and then teach children, the future generation, the direction of sustainable living.
The Parent Environmental School, open to any adult parent, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on the 5th to the 8th. ▲Session 1 (5th): The role of households and parents on the ecosystem ▲Session 2 (6th): Eco-friendly recipes for independent children ▲Session 3 (7th): The importance of environmental education for the next generation ▲Session 4 (8th): Environmental reading and eco-friendly practices with children.
Lecturers Im Bong-hee, author of ‘Study Independence Completed Before Age Ten,’ and Sim Jeong-eun, a current elementary school teacher and author of ‘Environmental Classes Also Need Upcycling,’ will deliver passionate lectures in each session.
Bangbae Forest Environmental Library, where the education will be held, is Seocho-gu’s representative eco-friendly specialized library that opened in June last year. The library is nestled in the forest of Seoripul Neighborhood Park, which spans 140,000 pyeong, and from above, its nest-like shape resembles a comma. The library, harmonized with nature from its building to its surroundings, has established itself as Korea’s top eco-friendly library with over 200,000 annual users within just one year of operation.
The library operates a zero-waste caf? without disposable products, runs weekend shuttle buses, and implements eco-friendly facilities and policies such as a solar power electricity generation system. Through these efforts, it has reduced 22,867 kg of carbon emissions in one year, equivalent to planting 3,465 pine trees.
In particular, the Kkaeal Forest School runs environmental programs linked with the nearby Seoripul Park, including Bangbae Forest sound walks for exploring natural ecology, birdwatching group activities around the library, Bangbae Forest experiential classes, and plogging in Seoripul Park.
District Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “Bangbae Forest Environmental Library leads the culture of eco-friendly libraries by continuously raising awareness of the environmental issue of the climate crisis we face in daily life and operating various programs that promote the value of the environment. We will continue to create a library where all generations can think about, experience, and practice environmental care together.”
