China's state-run media has issued a warning that the United States, which is pushing for additional semiconductor control measures targeting China, could face retaliation in the future.
The state-run English-language newspaper Global Times criticized the US's additional semiconductor control moves against China on the 2nd as "hegemonic measures to suppress China's artificial intelligence (AI) industry and maintain global monopoly," stating this.
The newspaper cited observers saying, "The Joe Biden administration is reportedly pushing unilateral restrictions to block China's access to AI memory chips and manufacturing equipment," and "(In China) the analysis is that the US cannot hinder China's technological development and instead only forces Chinese companies to strive for technological self-reliance."
It also diagnosed that as the US expands its "small-yard, high-fence" strategy, which means stringent regulations in limited areas, China could launch countermeasures including filing complaints with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Earlier, Bloomberg News reported on the 31st of last month that the additional semiconductor control measures against China, expected to be announced as early as the end of next month, may include provisions preventing Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix from supplying high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to Chinese companies. Immediately after this report, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly opposed it, stating, "Suppression and oppression cannot silence China's voice."
Amid this, the Global Times report on this day is evaluated as a strong warning message from state media on behalf of the Chinese government toward the United States. China experts foresee that such control measures and decoupling moves will not only further worsen US-China relations but also deal a blow to American companies. Furthermore, it is expected that US allies such as South Korea and Japan, which export large volumes to China, will inevitably suffer losses as well.
