NHK and Jiji Press reported on the 1st that Japan's average temperature last month was the highest ever recorded for July since the Japan Meteorological Agency began keeping statistics in 1898.
As a result, Japan has set a new record for the highest average temperature in July for two consecutive years. Last July, the average temperature rose 1.9 degrees, marking the highest record in 45 years.
Out of the 153 observation points nationwide this year, 62 locations reportedly broke their highest temperature records. Tokyo city center (Chiyoda Ward) recorded 28.7 degrees, 3.0 degrees higher than usual, and Obihiro City in Hokkaido was observed to be 4.0 degrees higher.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated, "Record-breaking temperatures may continue due to global warming," and added, "Since temperatures are expected to be higher than usual in August as well, caution is needed regarding heat-related illnesses."
