Baek made this statement on the morning of the 1st at 9:50 AM when he appeared for a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review) at the Seoul Western District Court. When reporters asked, "Do you think the victim was stalking you?" Baek replied, "Yes." Regarding his refusal to take a drug test, he said, "I didn't because of secret spies." He also denied all questions such as "Did you usually carry a knife?" and "Is it true that you had conflicts at work?" by saying, "I don't know."

Judge Lee Soon-hyung, the warrant judge at the Seoul Western District Court, will conduct the warrant review for Baek, who is charged with murder, starting at 10:30 AM that day. Baek's detention decision is expected to be made as early as that afternoon.

Baek is accused of stabbing and killing a male neighbor, Mr. A (43), in front of the main gate of an apartment complex in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, around 11:30 PM on the 29th of last month. Mr. A, who had stepped outside to smoke, was stabbed by Baek with a weapon. Despite his injuries, Mr. A tried to report to the police by moving about 5 meters to the management office, but Baek followed him and repeatedly swung the weapon, killing him. Baek fled to his home immediately after the crime but was arrested an hour later.

Police investigations confirmed that Baek and Mr. A had encountered each other a few times during walks but had no personal relationship. Additionally, Baek was found to have no history of receiving treatment or taking medication for mental illness.

The day before, the National Forensic Service (NFS) gave a preliminary verbal opinion that the cause of death of the victim appeared to be "multiple stab wounds to the entire body" (death caused by injuries from a weapon).
