At the Temporary Meeting of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Association
The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Association held the 143rd extraordinary meeting of the association on July 31 in the situation room on the 2nd floor of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority. At the meeting, Kang Jeong-il (a Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member from Gwangyang) was appointed as the new chairman of the 13th association, and Kim Gu-yeon (a Gyeongnam Provincial Assembly member from Hadong) was appointed as the vice chairman. They also received a briefing on the progress of major projects from Seon Yang-gyu, Acting Head of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority.
In his greeting, newly appointed Chairman Kang Jeong-il expressed, “I am grateful for the support from the committee members, and I promise to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to the development of the Gwangyang Bay area.”

He also stated, “Although it is difficult to advance projects due to the economic downturn caused by various adverse factors, I urge all association members and authority staff to unite and strive to make the Gwangyang Bay area a future-oriented investment hub.”
Furthermore, he requested active cooperation with the Yeosu Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office to promptly complete the dredged soil disposal site at Yulchon 2 Industrial Complex so that land can be supplied in a timely manner to the Gwangyang Bay area, which is facing a shortage of factory sites. He also demanded securing personnel to prevent any disruption in work due to vacancies within the authority.
Vice Chairman Kim Gu-yeon said, “I will support smooth communication between association members and authority staff to ensure that various projects proceed well.”
Committee member Jeong Young-gyun (a Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member from Suncheon) emphasized that securing water resources is essential for attracting secondary battery industry companies and urged the establishment of sustainable water management plans.
Committee member Wi Gwang-hwan (Director of Job Investment Attraction Bureau, Jeonnam Province) requested the swift development of the industrial complex by completing the internal arterial road of the Sepung Industrial Complex and devising measures for the sale of circular land to ensure thorough efforts in attracting companies.
Committee member Choi Jeong-gi (Deputy Mayor of Yeosu) requested the prompt completion of the marine-friendly space construction at Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex before the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo to support the successful hosting of the international event.
Seon Yang-gyu, Acting Head of the Gwangyang Economic Authority, stated, “Through communication and cooperation with the association members, I will do my best to ensure that the major pending projects of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone proceed without any setbacks.”
